One of the my favourite graphics from the 5K app is the attendance record. For now, I have recreate
Here is a list of all the unique parkrun events I have completed. It took me some time to semi-automate this, but I’m pleased with the result 😄. I’m continuing to explore and create new parkrun stats and charts for myself. My latest project was to make some Apple Fitness style ‘rings’ that quantify how much of each UK County I have completed in parkrun. The charts are built in plotly. I write some Python to save them and copy them over to my hugo blog static/ folder. And then I wrote a hugo shortcode to automate looping over my files, finding the donut charts and rendering them inside some <divs>, and leveraging some styling (CSS flexbox mainly) to make them all align and space out nicely....
Continuing my fun mapping my UK parkrun data, here is all the UK Counties mapped, with some stats on my completion rates. Parkrun UK County Completion The first plot maps out every county in the UK, and colours it according to my completion percentage (percentage of events in that county I’ve run). Parkrun UK County Completion with Events The second plot is an extension of the first, by adding in markers for every UK parkrun event....
I have always wanted to know how many parkruns reside within my local county, Nottinghamshire. There are various apps out there that have parkrun challenges, but none of them ever break it down to UK County level. (The most common is UK ‘regions’ for example East Midlands, but this is very large). So I have done it myself, and plan to do it for all counties so I can track it....
At the start of June 2024, the UEFA Euros 2024 began. And one of my favourite things to do is enter a sweepstake. For the last few tournaments, amongst family and friends I have organised a small-scale sweepstake for fun. I’ve never won… When this tournament came around, I realised it is a perfect opportunity for a beginner ReactJS / frontend project. And so, my first frontend portfolio project was born - the Sweepstaker....
So if you’ve read my post about learning web development, you will be aware that my current hobby is learning full stack web development. I’ve completed a number of tutorial videos, and now I’m trying to put together a mini Strava/Running dashboard. Here’s a quick screen recording of what I’ve achieved after 1.5 months of learning the “PERN” stack. I know it’s not great, but I’m super happy having managed to hook frontend and backend together and render a cool chart!...
I saw recently that there were record numbers applying for the London Marathon. I myself am part of the problem as I put my name down this year 😱. And as it happens, I had previously pulled together the data on this and charted it. So here is an updated view as a Plotly chart! It almost seems to be increasing exponentially in the last few years! I wonder what the driver of its increasing popularity is?...
What is this page? I am going to treat this like an evergreen page where I document my progress as and when it happens. This is to serve 3 purposes: To help myself structure my learning To show others one person’s learning journey Full context here is that I’m learning web development as a hobby. I have a full time job (not in web development) and a lovely wife so my available time can vary between having no time/energy some weeks, to having a good amount....
